Raquel Bartolomé Casado’s main research focus is to apply single-cell and spatial methods to study the intestinal immune system in health and disease, with special interest in colorectal cancer. After obtaining her degree in Biotechnology and completed her MSc studies at the University of Salamanca (Spain), Raquel moved to Norway to do her PhD in Prof. Frode Jahnsen’s lab at Oslo University Hospital. During her PhD, she investigated the longevity of the adaptive immune cell compartment in the human small intestine, with a special focus on characterizing resident memory T cells. For her postdoc, she joined the Teichmann lab at Wellcome Sanger Institute (Cambridge, UK) during two years. There, she employed cutting-edge single-cell and spatial technologies to study how the intestinal immune system adapts to tolerate commensal bacteria and participated in a Human Cell Atlas project mapping all the cell types across the gastrointestinal tract. Then, Raquel moved at the Institute for Cancer Research, with the aim to integrate her expertise in an ongoing translational research program for colorectal cancer at the Dep. of Molecular Oncology. She secured funding from the Norwegian Cancer Society to explore the relationship among cancer cells, immune cells, and the microbiome in colorectal cancer with the aim to discover new therapeutic avenues for patients not responding to immunotherapy.
