Åbo Akademi University Research Flagship InFLAMES: Innovation Ecosystem based on the Immune System, funded by the Research Council of Finland, invites applications for two fixed-term postdoctoral researcher positions in the field of Biochemistry or Cell Biology with a focus on Immunology for a period of three years starting September 1st, 2024. The fixed-termed positions are full time.

The InFLAMES Flagship is a joint effort of Åbo Akademi University, University of Turku, and the associated ecosystem. It aims at being an internationally recognized, top-level, immunological research and development cluster attracting both researchers and business partners. It will produce break-through knowledge on immunological principles and diseases. The Flagship also aims to provide novel discoveries, which lead to improved diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory disorders. Innovations, internationally recognized scientists, an extensive state-of-the-art research infrastructure and intensive academy–industry interactions form the foundation of the InFLAMES Flagship research.

DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION
The positions will be seated at the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the Subject Cluster of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, at the Subject of Pharmacy or at Turku Bioscience in Turku.

The key responsibilities are to conduct scientific research related to the Flagship’s research profile (please see https://inflames.utu.fi/) at Åbo Akademi University.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EVALUATION
Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in biosciences or other relevant discipline. As a rule, the time elapsed since completing the doctoral degree should not exceed four years in accordance with the Regulations for Personnel of the university, excluding maternity leaves, parental leaves, military service, etc. (a copy of the diploma of a doctoral degree should be submitted in the application).
  • Research experience in Immunology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, or Pharmacy
  • Commitment to scientific excellence as demonstrated by a strong publication record and scientific output
  • A successful candidate should be in touch with an InFlames-affiliated principal investigator at Åbo Akademi University (https://www.abo.fi/en/pis-within-the-inflames-flagship/) and is expected to be able to join one of these research groups.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including written and oral communication in English
  • Strong organizational and time management skills

Desirable qualifications:

  • International research experience
  • Other academic achievements in addition to the doctoral degree.

The applications will be assessed as follows:

  • Research competence (75%) measured through research plan, relevant academic publications, participation in research- and other academic projects and other research related experience. The research plan must be relevant for the Research Flagship InFLAMES.
  • Interactive competence (25%) that covers ability to cooperate in collegial manner and administrative ability and experience which may have been acquired also in activities outside the academia.

The appointment will be based on an overall assessment of the applicant’s potential for development and competences and in relation to the necessary qualities to successfully carry out the tasks for the position. The applicants may be invited to an interview.

SALARY AND CONDITIONS
The project researcher’s salary is based on levels 5–6 of the job demand levels for teaching and research staff. In addition, an individual salary component based on personal work performance is added to the salary. Please see the salary chart for teaching and research personnel.

Researchers have a total working time of 1,612 hours per year. A trial period of six months applies to all new employees. The person’s appointed will have access to occupational health care-services.
