About Professor Holger:

Professor Eltzschig is a physician-scientist trained in anesthesiology, cardiac anesthesia, and critical care medicine whose research is focused on hypoxia-inducible transcription factors (HIFs) during perioperative organ injury. Studies from his laboratory revealed that HIFs are stabilized during acute injury of the lungs, kidney, intestine, or heart. Translational studies demonstrate that these pathways can be targeted for disease treatment.

His focus is on defining therapeutic strategies to dampen harmful inflammation using pharmacologic HIF activators, direct targets of HIFs, or HIF-regulated microRNAs. The findings of their translational research have been taken into randomized clinical trials to define therapeutic interventions for preventing or treating organ injury in surgical patients or during critical illness (e.g. W81XWH2110032; PI: Eltzschig).

He has extensive experience as a scientific mentor, having mentored over 90 researchers and faculty members of different career levels, including students, postdoctoral researchers and clinical fellows.
