Osamu Takeuchi received his M.D. from Osaka University Medical School in 1995. After completing clinical training, he pursued a Ph.D. at Osaka University, where he studied innate immunity under Prof. Shizuo Akira. During his doctoral research, he identified that different Toll-like receptors (TLRs) recognize distinct microbial components. He then conducted postdoctoral training at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute under Prof. Stanley Korsmeyer. Following this, he returned to Osaka University as an assistant professor, where he investigated the functional roles of TLR signaling molecules and RIG-I-like receptors in infection. In 2012, he joined the Institute for Frontier Life and Medical Sciences at Kyoto University as a full professor, later moving to the Graduate School of Medicine at Kyoto University in 2018. His current research focuses on RNA regulation in immune and inflammatory responses, with a particular emphasis on the role of Regnase-1, an RNase crucial for cytokine mRNA degradation.
