Bioinformatics specialist for InFLAMES Flagship
We have a vacancy for an expert in data analytics and bioinformatics to join our Bioinformatics team at the InFLAMES Flagship, University of Turku. The InFLAMES Flagship is a joint effort of the University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University to form an internationally top-level immunological research and development cluster, and become a globally attractive environment for both researchers and business partners. The ideal candidate will be a skilled data scientist, holding either an MSc or PhD degree, with strong computational and analytical skills, and an interest in helping biological and medical researchers in analysing unique large-scale datasets. The candidate will work in close collaboration with researchers affiliated with the InFLAMES Flagship in the fields of biomedicine, genomics, immunology and bioinformatics.
The position will offer a vantage point in the rapidly developing field of immuno-omics research and analytics, with versatile opportunities to learn and become an expert in the field, where there is a growing requirement for data scientists. We are seeking a highly motivated candidate for collaborative service projects that require skills in developing and applying data science methods, with the possibility to co-author manuscripts.
Key responsibilities
- Analysis and integration of large-scale data sets from transcriptomics, proteomics, genetics, epigenetics, and other omics technologies, along with medical data
- Testing, further development and application of data analytic solutions for omics datasets, and keeping track of the newest methods in this fast developing field
- Provision of expert bioinformatics support for the InFLAMES Flagship researchers as a part of the InFLAMES Bioinformatics support team (currently, 6 researchers)
Specific qualifications
- MSc or PhD degree in computer science, information technology, bioinformatics, biomathematics, biostatistics, or other relevant field
- Confident communication skills in English and strong project management and reporting skills
- Experience in various bioinformatics data analysis tools for large-scale omics data analyses
- Good programming skills (e.g. Python, R) and ability to work with version control tools (e.g. Git)
- Previous experience in biomedical research and analyses is considered an advantage

Salary
The salary is determined by the collective agreement system of Finnish universities. The position belongs to the research personnel category. For a project researcher (holding MSc degree) the salary will be on levels 2 – 4, where the task specific salary component is 2 182,19 – 2 720,86 € per month. For a Senior researcher (holding PhD) the salary will be on levels 4-6, where the task-specific salary component is 2720,86–3673,96 euros per month.
In addition, a personal salary element will be paid, which is a 6% – 50% of the task-specific salary component.
Duration of the contract
The start date of employment is December 1st 2023, but is negotiable. The position will be fixed-term until the end of 2026, with a possibility for extension. The position will be subject to a six-month trial period. The qualification requirements of the position are written in the University of Turku rules of procedure.
