SUMMARY:InFLAMES seminar: From manuscript to impact: navigating high-impact
  publishing and an academic career
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Professor Miguel Soares\, the Gulbenkian Institute of
Molecular Medicine (GIMM)\, Portugal\n\nTitle: From manuscript to impact:
navigating high-impact publishing and an academic career\nTime: 12 Novembe
 r 2026\, 15:15-16:15\nLocation: Säätiö\, Medisiina D\n\nAbout the speak
er:\n\nProfessor Miguel Soares earned his Ph.D. in Science from the Univer
sity of Louvain in Belgium in 1995. He worked as a Principal Investigator
at Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência\, Oeiras\, Portugal from 2004 to 2024
and is currently active at Gulbenkian Institute of Molecular Medicine (GIM
M). He was offered a professorship at Lisbon Medical Schools of Universida
de de Lisboa\, Portugal\, in 2004.\n\nThe research of his laboratory aims
at understanding the mechanisms regulating inflammation and immunity and h
ow these can be targeted therapeutically to overcome the pathologic outcom
e of major immune mediated inflammatory diseases.\n\nThey have\, for examp
le\, identified carbon monoxide (CO) as a cytoprotective and immunoregulat
ory gasotransmitter\, found that CO is protective against a broad range of
immune mediated inflammatory conditions\, and discovered that CO prevents
the deleterious effects exerted by labile heme and driving the pathogenes
is of severe malaria. They have described cell autonomous transcriptional
stress-responses as essential to support the survival of an infected host
irrespectively of its pathogen load\, providing a mechanistic basis for th
e establishment of disease tolerance to malaria and sepsis. Later they unc
overed a metabolic response that controls malaria virulence &amp\; transmi
ssion\, an inter-organ response that controls life-threatening malaria ane
mia\, and found that regulation of iron metabolism by ferritin heavy chain
influences T regulatory cell lineage stability under homeostatic and path
ological conditions.\n\nYou can check a more detailed biography of the spe
aker at his Orcid page here: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9314-4833.
