SUMMARY:Frontiers of Science: Prof. Miguel Soares
DESCRIPTION:12th November at 12:00\nOnsite event\nin Presidentti auditorium
 \, BioCity\nAutumn 2026 poster\n\nProf. Miguel Soares\, Gulbenkian Institu
te for Molecular Medicine\, Portugal\nMetabolic adaptation as a defence st
rategy against infection\n\nHost: Antonio Sousa (aggode@utu.fi)\n\nCoffee
and sandwich served at 11:45\, first come first serve!\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nSix P
hD researchers and early-career postdocs are welcome to have lunch and dis
cuss with Prof. Soares after the seminar. This is a great possibility to l
earn hosting skills in a friendly environment and create connections for f
uture. Everyone is welcome to join\, BioCity Turku will offer the lunch.\n
\nIf you got interested in joining the lunch\, please send an email to bio
cityturku@bioscience.fi\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nProf. Soares’ lab studies how immu
nity evolved in multicellular organisms as a means to limit the fitness co
sts imposed by symbiotic interactions with different classes of microbes.
Resistance is a cardinal feature of immunity\, whereby soluble and cellula
r components of the immune system sense and target pathogenic microorganis
ms for containment\, destruction\, or expulsion. In addition\, multicellul
ar organisms deploy another defense strategy\, referred to as disease tole
rance\, which does not target microbes directly. This evolutionarily conse
rved strategy relies on stress responses that rewire host energy metabolis
 m. At the Inflammation Laboratory\, researchers aim to identify and charac
terize how these stress responses engage inter-organ communication process
es that rewire energy metabolism in order to limit the fitness costs assoc
iated with infections caused by different classes of microbes. The objecti
ve is to provide a transformative understanding of host–microbe interact
ions and their translational impact on the treatment of global infectious
 diseases.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nSelected publications\n\nSoares MP\, Jentho E. Age
