SUMMARY:Frontiers of Science: Prof. Francesc Villarroya
DESCRIPTION:November 2nd at 12:00\nOn-site event\nPresidentti auditorium\nA
 utumn 2023 program\n\nProf. Francesc Villarroya\, University of Barcelona\
, Spain\nAdvancing the knowledge on the secretory role of brown adipose ti
ssue: new actors\, new actions\nHost: Pia Rantakari (piaranta@utu.fi)\n\nC
offee and sandwich at 11:45\, first come first served!\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nSix s
tudents and early-career postdocs are welcome to have a lunch in restauran
t Mauno and discuss with Prof. Villarroya after the seminar. This is a gre
at possibility to learn hosting skills in friendly environment and create
connections for future. Every student is welcome to join\, in spite of whi
ch research group they belong to. BioCity Turku will offer the lunch.\n\nI

n\n&nbsp\;\n\nOur lab is specialized in the study of the molecular and cel
l biology of the control of mitochondrial energy metabolism and associated
diseases. We study the molecular mechanisms of transcriptional control of
the differentiation of specialized cell types with key roles in energy ho
meostasis as well as how metabolic and endocrine functions are regulated i
n cells/tissues. We use experimental models at a sub-cellular (mitochondri
a)\, cellular and animal model levels of analysis\, complemented by studyi
ng samples from patients with metabolic diseases (obesity\, lipodystrophy\
, T2DM). Our aim is to identify the main molecular actors that control ene
rgy metabolism in health and disease\, and by this means to establish fore
seeable prevention and treatment strategies to ameliorate metabolic diseas
 es.\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nSelected publications\n\nAdela Urisarri\, Ismael Gonzál
