Assistant Professor or Associate Professor within the Strategic Research Profiling Area Solutions for Health (tenure track)

Åbo Akademi University (ÅAU) invites applications to a position as Assistant Professor or Associate Professor within the strategic research profiling area Solutions for Health and the InFLAMES Flagship program, both funded by the Academy of Finland, starting 1 June 2022 or as agreed. The position is fixed-term and within the tenure-track career system. Depending on the experience and competence, the employee can be appointed as Assistant Professor or Associate Professor with the possibility for a continuous employment as full professor. The position is placed in Turku.

The position is sited within the Biosciences cluster at the Faculty of Science and Engineering (https://www.abo.fi/en/about-abo-akademi-university/faculties/faculty-of-science-and-engineering/), and within the Biocity community (www.biocityturku.fi) and having close links to Turku Bioscience Center (https://www.abo.fi/en/about-abo-akademi-university/faculties/faculty-of-science-and-engineering/turku-bioscience/), both of which are joint organizations of Åbo Akademi University and the University of Turku.

Research within Solutions for Health (https://www.abo.fi/en/solutions-for-health/) involves cooperation with the industry, research institutes and other universities, both in Finland and abroad. Central research areas within the profiling area are biovisualization, drug development and pharmaceutical sciences, organic chemistry and biochemistry, structural biology and bioinformatics, cell and molecular biology and materials research. Since 2020, the subjects Health Science, Psychology, Logopedics and Information Technology are also included in the profiling area.

The InFlames Flagship: Innovation Ecosystem based on the Immune System (https://inflames.utu.fi/) is focused on inflammation, infection, immunology and cancer, and complements well the Solutions for Health strategic research profile. The InFLAMES Flagship is a joint effort of Åbo Akademi University, University of Turku, and the associated ecosystem. It aims at being an internationally recognized, top-level research and development cluster attracting both researchers and business partners. Innovations, internationally recognized scientists, an extensive state-of-the-art research infrastructure and intensive academy–industry interactions form the foundation of the InFLAMES Flagship research.

The Faculty of Science and Engineering provides open access and joint use of research infrastructures with academic players as well as with industry. The faculty belongs to the unique health innovation ecosystem in Turku, which brings together four higher educational institutions, the hospital district and approximately 100 bio and pharma companies.

WORK TASKS AND QUALIFICATIONS

The main focus of the position is tied to computer-based solutions to biological and medical problems related to inflammatory diseases, cancer and the biology of aging, and is based on relevant ongoing research at Åbo Akademi University and closely connected to the InFLAMES Flagship. The Assistant Professor’s/Associate Professor’s field of activity particularly includes conducting interdisciplinary research in the research field Life Sciences. The research field of the position is supported by local strengths in biotechnology and infrastructure, established national and international research networks and units, and by strong research in adjacent areas where subject knowledge can be applied.

Tasks of the Assistant Professor/Associate Professor include conducting high-level research, teaching at all levels of education, and active participation in the academic development and in societal interaction and international cooperation within the field. The emphasis for the position will be on research-related tasks, and research within the position should support the goals of the InFLAMES Flagship.

Assistant Professors’ primary task will be to pursue their own research. Assistant Professors are usually required to contribute to teaching and supervision, dedicating one third of their working hours to these duties. An Assistant Professor is required to have a doctoral degree, research experience and pedagogical competence. As a rule, the time elapsed since taking the Doctor’s degree should not exceed 4 years.

The responsibilities of an Associate Professor include independent research, leading research projects and raising funding for research. Associate Professors participate in teaching and supervision in general a third of the working time. An Associate Professor is required to have a doctoral degree, solid experience in research, the potential to lead research groups and obtain research funding as well as possess international research experience. Formal pedagogical competence is also required.

LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY

The language of instruction and examination at ÅAU is Swedish. Teaching positions at ÅAU requires excellent proficiency in Swedish and sufficient proficiency in Finnish. For the position in question, foreigners and non-native Finnish citizens are exempt from the requirement to have knowledge of Swedish and Finnish. However, as the administrative and teaching language of the university is primarily Swedish, the person appointed is recommended to acquire such knowledge of Swedish during his or her employment, so that he or she will be able to successfully participate in teaching and administrative tasks in Swedish in the future. Oral and written knowledge of English is necessary for managing the duties of the position successfully.

SALARY AND WORK TIME

The Assistant Professor’s salary is set on demand levels 5-6 and the Associate Professor’s on demand levels 6-7 for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities, https://www.sivista.fi/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Salary-Scales-010820-and-010621.pdf. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid. Teachers and researchers have a total working time of 1,612 hours per year.
